Cyclists take on coast and hills to Trafalgar

-

The annual Great Victorian Bike Ride is taking in Gippsland’s coast and country areas this week, ending in Trafalgar on Sunday.

More than 3000 riders will be enjoying the sites and experiences of riding 539 kilometres, beginning at Wilsons Promontory on the weekend and travelling to Trafalgar via Bairnsdale.

Bicycle Network, along with the Victoria Police, VicRoads and local councils are asking local road users to be aware of the increase in bike traffic, changed traffic conditions and extended travel times. Drivers should seek alternate routes if possible.

Riders will be on roads after leaving campsites in designated towns along the route (between 6.30am and 8:30am each day) and most will arrive between noon and 5pm at the campsites.

It is five years since the Great Victorian Bike Ride took in Gippsland.

On Sunday, riders took on their first leg of the route from Wilsons Promontory to Foster, then yesterday’s route was Foster to Yarram.

The ride continues today to Seaspray then to Bairnsdale tomorrow. Thursday will be a rest day.

On Friday, cyclists will ride from Bairnsdale to Maffra, then to Glengarry on Saturday.

The final day of riding will be Sunday, when the riders end in Trafalgar.

The route from Glengarry to Trafalgar enters Baw Baw Shire’s boundaries at Millers Rd, travelling along Heartsridge, Embletons and Wheelbarrow Rds then onto Trafalgar-Willow Grove Rd to end at the Trafalgar Recreation Reserve. Reserve Rd, Trafalgar will be closed on Sunday.
