Snapshot of the past

A photograph of the train turntable at the Warragul Railway Station in 1878.

The train turntable was located at the eastern end of the station platform and used for reversing the direction of the locomotive.

The Warragul Railway Station opened in the same year – 1878 - as part of the Victorian Railways’ new line linking Melbourne with Sale.

The town grew around the station, which increased in importance due to its location in a timber-producing area. It was later the junction of the branch line towards Noojee, which began in 1892.

When it first opened, the station consisted of two small sheds on a siding, but a substantial timber station building was added in the following year.
