Mawarra - People Working Together

It’s what Mawarra has been doing for over 60 years now. Mawarra likes to think of it as their superpower! The International Day of People with Disability theme for 2017 is “Transformation towards a sustainable and resilient society for all.” This statement reflects what Mawarra has been working towards with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) now here in Gippsland.

Transformation comes in many forms and Mawarra has re-newed itself over the last year in many ways with the help of Mawarra’s many friends, the Mawarra community of people they support, staff, specialists, volunteers, families and recently extended to new and old friends on its relaunched Facebook page.

Mawarra continues to innovate through opening up of several new activities for people they support, with over 50 activities provided weekly, specialist teachers and guides and new and varied work in their supported employment services.

Client Services Manager, Mike Lane, who began at Mawarra earlier this year, said he was impressed by what Mawarra had to offer and saw many opportunities in the near future. “I’ve been amazed by the variety of activities at Mawarra since coming on board and Mawarra’s use of specialists in activities. Not only that, the staff have so many amazing skills they put to use in their daily work. The wonderful community of people we support and those who support us means we really do have superpowers.”

Mr Lane said he was happy to be a part of the renewal of Mawarra in preparation and beyond the introduction of the NDIS. “Mawarra’s strengths have been its people, their talents and working together. Mawarra will be using these strengths to pursue more opportunities for the people we support. We will also welcome new people in the near future by offering flexible supports and new activities at different times. We’re really excited about it.”
