International Day for People with a Disability - Headway Gippsland

-

Headway Gippsland offers a number of programs across Gippsland for people with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) or other disabilities.

Headway Gippsland is a registered provider of services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme and offers individual supports tailored to the person, in addition to Social Support Groups across Gippsland.

My Story –

Headway recently ran an 8 week program for a small group of people who have an ABI.

The program ‘My Story’ enabled participants to write their own story, telling of their life pre and post brain injury, and the impact this has had on their lives.

Kerryn Vaughan the group facilitator, put together an amazing program which assisted participants to feel comfortable to share their stories.

Hours of work went into each of the stories, both at the sessions and at home and the topics were often very raw and confronting.

These very personal and powerful stories have been captured in a booklet which is available on the Headway Gippsland website and highlight the person behind the ABI.

The booklet will be launched in the coming months and the intention is to seek funds to enable us to promote and share this valuable resource with other professionals, services and schools and with the general public to show the very personal stories and experiences behind ABI.

We are hopeful that if enough funding became available we could run further similar programs or extend this program into the area of public speaking for group members.

Headway are so grateful to each and every person involved and thank Latrobe Community Health Services for granting the funding for this project.
