Cuba captured in art
Cuba has long held a fascination for many travellers. It conjures up images of a robust culture of street music, jaded but much-loved old cars, tropical aromas, busy streets of Havana along with faded colonial structures and facades.
With these pictures in mind, Warragul residents Russell and Carol Monson travelled to Cuba in 2016. They will share some of their recollections with an exhibition of photographs and textile art at Red Tree Gallery in Jindivick.
The official opening will be held on Friday, December 1 from 6pm to 7pm. It will remain open for viewing until Wednesday, December 27.
Russell and Carol journeyed the length and breadth of the island of Cuba by public transport and were not disappointed.
They were captivated by the UNESCO listed cities of Havana, Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Camaguey, the time warp of ancient cars lovingly polished and often held together with wire, the vibrant street music and the flourishing visual arts scene.
Both active members of the Baw Baw Arts Alliance and the Warragul Camera Club, Russell and Carol’s photographs and textile art will be fittingly displayed at the gallery owned by Laurie and Marion Collins alongside many of Laurie’s metal sculptures.
Red Tree Gallery is located at 420 Main Jindivick Road, Jindivick.
