Wild Dogs on track for final

-

Warragul and District remain on top of the under 18 Gippsland Cricket League ladder despite not taking the field on Sunday.

Bottom placed Traralgon and District were scrambling for players during the week and it is understood despite a plea to the Alberton Cricket Association for players, could not find the numbers to field a team.

In the only completed match for the round, Bairnsdale recorded a tight win over Leongatha and District with the match going down to the final ball.

Having posted 196, Bairnsdale held their nerve as Leongatha finished on 9/194.

Late afternoon rain put paid to SaleMaffra’s hopes of defeating Central Gippsland.

In a match that had been reduced to 43 overs per side, the home side posted 4/233 at Rosedale.

The score was always going to be difficult to chase down, with Central Gippsland making their way to 5/104 from 33 overs before the rain saved them.

Under 18 GCL will resume in the new year with the Wild Dogs on track to qualify for the final.

Meanwhile, Warragul and District’s under 16 clash against Central Gippsland was washed out with just 17 overs completed.

Needing some points to progress to the final, the draw proved enough for Central Gippsland to advance.

Central Gippsland had made it to a watchful 0/33 from 17 overs before the match was eventually called off.

In other matches, Sale-Maffra comfortably accounted for Bairnsdale while Leongatha was too good for Traralgon in a high scoring affair.

A 179-run stand for the opening wicket helped Leongatha post 5/291 from their allotted 50 overs. Traralgon managed 8/217 in reply.

Sale-Maffra were never really troubled chasing Bairnsdale’s 79, winning by six wickets with more than 20 overs to spare.

Sale-Maffra and Central Gippsland will contest the under 16 final in February.
