Closely contested bowls

Garfield bowlers played in some close contests on Saturday, winning two and losing one.

Division two: Garfield defeated Traralgon (3) 94/90.

Playing away at Traralgon, Garfield had two wins and two losses but still won by four shots.

Division five: Garfield Morwell (4) 71/61.

Les Pumphrey’s team was up 3/1 on the third before Morwell won seven of next eight to lead 14/4 on the 11th. Garfield fought back, winning the next seven to be up 17/14 on the 18th. The final stages were close, Morwell winning three ends and Garfield storming home with four ends to win 23/19.

Gordon Moxey’s team started well, up 7/1 on the fifth. Morwell settled and reduce Garfield’s lead to 12/10 at the break. Garfield won the first three ends when play resumed to be up 20/10 on the 15th. Even though Morwell tried hard, they couldn’t catch Garfield who won 28/20.

Helene Newton’s team had a good hard fought game. Scores were level four times as each team won six ends before the break. Garfield was up 12/8 on the 12th before losing a four on the 13th to see scores levelled again. It was 15/15 on the 17th and 18/18 on the 21st before Morwell won three of the next four ends to give Garfield a 20/22 loss. A good game played by all. (2) defeated Results: Les Pumphrey (skip), Graeme Burton, Jim Boucher and Ron Saunders won 23/19. Gordon Moxey (skip), Bob Lamport, Don Knight and Jim Power won 28/20. Helene Newton (skip), Ken Newton, Cliff Stephens and Phil Humphreys lost 20/22.

Division six: Garfield (3) lost to Longwarry (2) 46/48.

Judy Pocklingto­n’s team lost the first two ends but got a three on the third. Longwarry won the next three to see Garfield trail 3/11 on the sixth. Garfield won five of the next seven but still trailed 11/16 on the 13th. Garfield came home strongly, winning six of the next seven ends to be up 21/17 on the 20th and only lost three singles from there for a 25/20 win.

Damian Brick’s team started slowly, down 2/11 on the fifth. Garfield improved to win five of next seven ends but still trailed 11/16 on the 12th. They won five ends to seven after the break, holding shots many times. However, Longwarry’s third and skip would cut shots back or get the shot to see Garfield lose to a stronger team, 21/28. Results: Judy Pocklingto­n (skip), Jan Johnson, Bev Sainsbery and Keith Sainsbery defeated Brian Mason’s team 25/20. Damian Brick (skip), Maureen Lamport, Lex Taylor and Alan Wilson lost to Gerry Wakefield’s team 21/28.
