One-sided matches for squash

-

Last week’s Tuesday night Baw Baw squash matches were mostly one-sided.

The match between Steve Mooney and Chris Cameron was the only one to go beyond three games with Chris running out the winner 6/9 9/6 9/4 9/6.

Steve won the first game with several wellplaced drives, but Chris lifted his game and just had Steve’s measure for the rest of the match.

The warm conditions again had an effect on the game with both players hitting some loose shots back to their opponent. In the end, though, Chris was better able to move his opponent out of position.

In the second match on court two, Peter Young proved far too strong for Bruce Bowering who was completely outplayed by Peter’s front court precision. The result was 9/3 9/2 9/4 in Peter’s favour. Joe Cicala won his match on forfeit. On court one the performances were similar. Russell Jackson and Björn Hestdal have both got their deep lobs working to perfection in the hot weather, putting enormous pressure on their opponents. Russell’s proved telling in his match against Barry Cain which he won 9/6 9/1 9/2. Björn had a similar effect on Steve Andrews, running out the winner 9/2 9/3 9/3.

The final game, although the scores indicate a comfortable win to Jason Tainton over Jim Wilkinson, was an enthralling contest of great skill and endurance.

Jim’s racquet control was a joy to behold with great and unpredictable changes of pace and depth as well as drops and boasts millimetres above the tin. These efforts had Jason stretched to the limit to reach them and then he had to play his best shots to put Jim under pressure.

Although Jim’s movement around the court was also admirable and, at times, gave him a beep test challenge, Jason’s power and placement was probably the defining factor in the game. He eventually ran out the winner 9/5 9/4 9/4.

The team results saw the Hawks defeat the Crows and the Vultures defeat the Swans, both two matches to one. Order of play for round seven is 3, 2, 1. If, at any time, due to unforeseen circumstances, you are unable to play please phone one of the organisers so that a replacement player can be substituted.
