Feedback sought on recreation strategy

-

Community members have until the end of this week to have their say on the future development of sport and recreation facilities in Baw Baw Shire.

Council is seeking community feedback to help shape a new recreation strategy that will shape future development and funding priorities for the next 10 years.

The new strategy will replace the outdated recreation strategy 2005-15.

The strategy will consider new pressures on the shire including population growth, new recreation trends, climate change, increasing expectations and the need for prioritisation of council funds.

It will assist council plan for current and future recreation facilities and attract external funding.

Mayor Joe Gauci said the strategy would provide council with strategic direction for planning and development of recreation and leisure opportunities over the next 10 years, including provision of recreation facilities and services.

“A well-rounded, realistic strategy will help best inform and guide future investment and service provision for fit-for-purpose open space, sport and recreation facilities over the next 10 years.

“We want to increase participation and improve access to sport and recreation opportunities for the whole community including women, families, young people and people with disabilities.

“The strategy will allow council to better understand current and future sport and recreation needs across the municipality, and in turn, make more informed investment and management decisions,” he said.

Community consultation end on Friday. Residents are encouraged to make a via the Have Your Say link on council’s website.

An additional online survey, specifically designed for sport and recreation organisations is available by contacting council’s recreation team on 5624 2411.

Following this round of community consultation, the draft strategy will be developed. It is expected a draft strategy will be developed and put out for further community consultation early next year.

The strategy is being jointly funded by council and Sport and Recreation Victoria.
