Powerful song strikes a chord

-

Local band “Before Time Fades” has been overwhelmed with responses to its debut single and musical video based on a local man’s journey through mental illness.

The powerful single “Bring Me Back to Life” has certainly struck a chord with hundreds of downloads and more than 26,000 music video views in just three weeks.

Lifeline has now reached out to the band with hopes the national charity will endorse the music video.

Drummer Dan Best of Warragul said “we’ve been overwhelmed with the response” as people describe it as comforting, touching and cathartic.

Dan wrote the powerful lyrics with Mindfull Aus CEO and former Warragul resident Matt Runnalls in mind. The pair met playing cricket together in Warragul.

“We’ve known each other a long time,” said Dan. “I followed Matt’s journey and have seen what he’s gone through.”

Matt quickly came on board, stating it had been a “pretty wicked experience” whilst humbling to be the focus of “Bring Me Back to Life”.

“Being able to turn the worst day of my life, my first suicide attempt in 2012 and my battle with mental illness and suicide into hope for others experiencing the similar thoughts and feelings that I did, is a wonderful feeling,” said Matt who at 26-years-old is an international speaker on mental health.

Dan said the song was “pretty dark” but relatable. The hope and light in the music video, filmed in St Kilda and inside the old Bonlac milk factory in Warragul, provides the balance.

Matt said filming was quite a traumatic experience. However, the positive effect the song and video was having on hundreds of people had made it worthwhile.

The video by “Dark Epic Media” focuses on the thought that saved Matt’s life – of one day becoming a father. Making it more poignant is the inclusion of his late best friend Shaun Ross’ nephew and sister alongside him in the video.

“That day, the thought that saved my life was that of one day becoming a father, I hope that people watch this and recognise that the best years are in fact ahead of us,” said Matt. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel and I hope this video helps you find your strength within; you’re worth it, you’re unique, but most importantly you are loved.”

Dan said four-piece band “Before Time Fades” also features singer/guitarist Benny Whiteley of Noojee, guitarist James McGrath of Pakenham and bass guitarist Mark Kruzinga of Cranbourne.

He said the band members had all gained from being involved in the project.

“People do relate to music. It’s a lot of people’s escape and outlet.”

Dan said the band was currently focused on writing original music. Although “fairly fresh”, they have developed about 10 songs and are set to record a debut album next year.

“Before Time Fades” are currently rehearsing for a gig at Matthew Flinders Hotel in Chadstone on Friday, January 19.
