Marist Sion endure tough carnival

-

Warragul’s Marist Sion College cricket side has endured a tough Marist cricket campaign in Sydney, failing to collect the points in their first four matches.

Rain interfered in their first match to share the points with Melbourne school Marcellin Bulleen.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, a patient 84-ball 25 to Rhys George and an unbeaten 21 from 24 balls from Will Robertson helped Marist Sion post 8/94 before rain halted play.

A close contest with Gippsland rivals Catholic College Sale followed in round two.

Robertson and Charlie Wans each took two wickets as Marist Sion restricted CCS to 129.

Despite the best efforts of Tyler Constantine (42), Marist Sion fell just short in reply, bowled out for 117.

Host school St Gregory’s mammoth total of 7/302 proved too much to handle in round three.

Alex McMillan was the pick of the bowlers in a tough day in the field, with Eddie McGillivray also picking up two wickets.

Rhys George continued his fine form with a half century, but couldn’t find the support as Marist Sion were dismissed for 138.

Marist Sion also found it tough going in the fourth round, dismissed by Newman College for just 75 from 44 overs.

Eddie McGillivray was best of the bats, scoring a patient 29 from 95 balls.

Despite Wans and McMillan picking up early wickets, there weren’t enough runs on the board as Newman College passed the total in the 17th over for the loss of three wickets.

Marist Sion College was aiming to finish the carnival on a strong note in their final game against Marist Ashgrove yesterday.

At time of going to print, Marist Ashgrove had made their way to 1/49 from 13 overs.

There was a strong representation of boys from several local Warragul District Cricket Association clubs in the squad.

The team for this year’s carnival was (with their local club name): Rhys George, captain (Neerim District), Alex McMillan, vice-captain (Western Park), Matthew Bow (Warragul), Eddie McGillivray (Jindivick), Tyler Constantine (Jindivick), Will Gown (Hallora), Patrick Mulqueen (Warragul), Will Robertson (Ellinbank), Jai Serong (Hallora), Oscar Sheehan (Western Park), Jake Stewart (Bunyip), Charlie Wans (Drouin), Daniel Whitten (Warragul).
