Drouin Leos donate to hospital

- By Sadira Snell

Drouin Secondary College has begun a group known as Leos, who organise and partake in community volunteer work and events.

The group of Leos, made up students in years eight and nine, recently decided to donate funds raised for the Warragul hospital, specifically the paediatrics ward.

Through a series of fundraising activities such as barbeques, bake sales and assisting Drouin Lions Club at the garden and home expo, the group of high school students raised a total of $2500 to go towards their goal.

The hospital expressed their gratitude to the Leo’s and revealed that the money would go into making renovations to the paediatrics ward, as well as investing in new equipment.

These advancements to the ward are expected to begin in the New Year and will not only benefit babies, but also children up into their late teenage years.

The Drouin Lions Club graciously sponsor the Leos, and members from the Lions attend all the events organised by the Leos, as well as providing them with insurance to take part in these community activities.

This year Drouin Secondary Collage had the highest amount of Leo members they have ever had and subsequently, they have been able to work alongside the Lions Club to raise the highest amount of funds ever recorded for the Leos association.

Lions representatives discussed the way in which the Leo’s program has instilled a passion within its members to help out in the community.

The Leos have not only participated in this fundraiser, but have also assisted in age care facilities in the region and helped at Heyfield Wetlands.

Drouin Secondary College has more than 40 other Leo members in addition to the year eight students responsible for raising money for the paediatrics ward.

The program has also been able to fundraise $2500 to go towards the St Vincent de Paul opp shop in Drouin.

Lions Club members noted that through running various fundraising stalls and assisting in volunteer programs, the Leos have been able to flourish into more confident individuals with an immense amount of community spirit.
