Team Jaffa record best ever result
The Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) team from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School recently came home with their best performance yet after competing at the annual four-day Energy Breakthrough competition held in Maryborough.
‘Team Jaffa’ completed an eight-hour race and received both a trophy and an award after achieving first place for design and construction, along with being named the overall runner-up in the Try-athlon Class (Open).
This event was the first opportunity the team had to race in ‘Kev’, their newly-constructed race vehicle for which they won the award. The team was informed that they had the best designed cars in Victoria and were at a level above what was expected.
St Paul’s is one of the only few schools left that actually design and build their own HPV vehicles, with the majority of schools utilising ‘kit’ vehicles bought from a manufacturer, or buy complete vehicles and race them.
This is the fourth ‘best design and construction’ award that St Paul’s has won over the years.
This is the 25th year HPV has been running at St Paul’s with Mr Ian Maud, who founded the St Paul’s HPV team in 1993 and has spent countless hours working with the students over the years, focusing on the development and design of the vehicles, rather than the race itself.
The Energy Breakthrough event attracts around 6000 school participants and 30,000 people to Maryborough from Australia and overseas.
