Division 4

- By Adam Johnson

Round eight saw one-day games played across all grades ahead of the mid-season break.

There were some fantastic individual performances as well as some very competitive and high scoring cricket.

The season will resume on January 6 2018.

Century on debut

Western Park 7/256 (cc) def Drouin 8/194 (cc) In what was arguably the match of the round, Beau Runnalls elevated Western Park to a match winning total with a silky century in his debut match for the Warriors.

Joining Peter Croft with the score at 2/36, Runnalls didn’t take long to settle at the crease despite a lengthy absence from the game.

Assisted by a swift outfield, the pair displayed a fully array of shots, regularly finding the boundary on either side of the wicket.

Their 111-run partnership was broken when Croft sent a top edge skyward to be caught off the bowling of Andrew Downie. His contribution of 74 (nine fours and two sixes) was a masterclass in solid defence and picking off the loose ball.

Fellow debutant Dean O’Brien strode out to join Runnalls and there was an immediate lift in the run rate. O’Brien (41) struck five boundaries and two sixes in a fourth wicket stand that realised 88 runs.

Runnalls brought up his ton a short time later (which included 14 fours and two sixes), but was then dismissed for an even 100.

The home side saw out their allotted overs to finish with a hefty 250 plus total.

Ben Dixon (2/9) made the early breakthroughs with two top order wickets, Jack Jarred (2/32) chimed in with the wickets of Runnalls and O’Brien, and Jack McConville (2/34) picked up two wickets in two balls late in the innings.

In reply, the Hawks were best served by Jack Jarred, who’s timing and stroke play saw him dominate the scoring. With a much-deserved century up for grabs he went to the well once too often and was caught in the deep for 94.

Jack McConville (21) played the supporting role to Jarred with the pair adding 119 for the second wicket.

With the target a long way off at 4/125 the Hawks fell away with Andrew Downie (30) the only man to offer much resistance. Runnalls and Croft capped off the day with two wickets apiece.

McDonald leads Kangas

Hallora 5/236 (cc) def Jindivick 6/198 (cc) Jindivick will be ruing the decision to send Hallora in to bat after a dynamic century from Kangas all-rounder Brian McDonald saw the home side set a challenging target.

In a career best innings of 136, McDonald was in control from the outset, peppering the boundary (20 fours) as he batted through
