Art brightens fences at WGAC

-

Building site fencing at the West Gippsland Arts Centre upgrade project has been given a new, bright and colourful lease on life.

The temporary fencing is now proudly displaying pieces of artwork by local artists.

Baw Baw Shire Council’s arts and culture advisory committee initiated the display to improve the look of the site and showcase local talent, particularly with the Queen’s Baton Relay visiting the town in February.

More than 50 expressions of interest were received for the display with artists’ work to be copied and printed onto site shroud mesh.

West Ward councillor Jessica O’Donnell, who is also chair of the arts and culture advisory committee, hoped this would give many locals and visitors a chance to enjoy the work of our regional artists in such an accessible space.

“This was a fabulous initiative to put our shire’s creative face on the site while our major arts space is undergoing its redevelopment,” said Cr O’Donnell.

The exhibiting artists include Sue Acheson, Russell Lilford, Bec Van Dyk, Naomi Duff, Phil Henshall, Chris Cochran, Keith Graham, Jill Harris, Ros Godman, Laurie Wasson, Donna O’Callaghan, Anita George and Nicole Smith.

As a bonus, the site fences - on which the works are displayed - have been temporarily pushed back towards the building to open up the Civic Place roadway.

Civic Place will return to a single lane arrangement to accommodate ongoing works from Monday, January 8.
