Warriors men are unbeaten

-

Warragul Warriors men remain undefeated at the midseason break of Gippsland Country Basketball League.

Sam Flanders (20 points), Dwain Scott (19), Ambu Uliando (14) and Mike Santo (11) led the scoring as the Warriors comfortably accounted for the Traralgon T-Birds 82-52 during round 10 action at Warragul Leisure Centre recently.

All but three of the 11 Warriors made it onto the scoresheet as the home side wrapped up another comfortable win.

An early three-pointer to Santo provided the early buffer, with the Warriors heading into quarter time leading 19-7.

The Warriors would not be headed, with Uliando and Flanders adding three-pointers to extend the lead to 25 at half-time.

Traralgon made a good start to the third term, gaining a small inroad to the deficit. However, the Warriors clicked into gear with another three-pointer to Flanders and increased the margin to 30.

An even final term played out as the Warriors maintained control, with highlights including a threepointer to Santo. Only a late injury to Nicholas Castle put a dampener on a solid performance by the home side.

Meanwhile, a tough start to the season continued for the Warriors women, who earlier went down to the T-Birds 78-47.

The Warriors made a fast start through Peta Rhodes, Kylie Mullen and Rhiannon Gallagher, with an upset appearing on the cards early.

But the T-Birds soon found their range through Tanarly Hood, hitting the lead at the first change despite a three-pointer to Hannah McKenzie.

The Warriors kept pace with their more fancied opponents and were well and truly still in the contest at half-time, trailing by just seven.

The T-Birds made their move in the third term, with a chain of five consecutive scores creating a handy buffer for the visitors to take an 18-point lead into the final change.

Despite three-pointers to Jasmine Ferguson and Gallagher in the final term, the T-Birds continued to control the contest on the way to a 31-point win.

The Warriors women sit fifth on the ladder and, while they are three wins behind fourth-placed Maffra Eagles, have two games in hand over their rivals.

The Warriors women will desperately need victory when they host the Korumburra Wildcats in round 11 action on Saturday with tip off from 6pm.

The men will also host the Wildcats in a double header, with action commencing at 8pm.
