New director to lead shire’s infrastructure

-

A new community assets director has been appointed to Baw Baw Shire.

Cohen Van der Velde has taken up the position, replacing former director Phil Cantillon.

Mr Cantillon, who also served as interim chief executive officer for seven months last year, has taken up a position with Frankston City Council.

Mr Van der Velde is a qualified civil engineer with more than 16 years experience, predominantly in local government, including his most recent role at Bass Coast Shire Council as infrastructure delivery manager for more than six years.

Mr Van der Velde’s experience includes senior management roles across a broad range of business functions including engineering design, construction and project management.

Mr Van der Velde, who undertook his secondary schooling in Warragul, is passionate about developing high performing people, teams and culture within organisations.

Baw Baw Shire chief executive Alison Leighton said the appointment followed a robust recruitment process.

“Cohen’s specialist knowledge, experience and enthusiasm will be a real asset to the role and ensure that we continue to deliver quality infrastructure, upgrades and services to the Baw Baw Shire community,” Ms Leighton said.

“He has a real passion for working closely with communities and highly values the power and impact of community engagement and public participation.

“I am confident that Cohen will do an outstanding job leading our infrastructure and assets portfolio, ensuring projects and services are delivered in-line with community needs and expectations.”

Mr Cantillon finished with the organisation in October.
