New kits for SES

Warragul SES Unit recently received several items of new equipment as part of the annual AAMI equipment grants program.

Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) volunteers from the Warragul unit attended an equipment presentati­on evening as part of the ongoing partnershi­p with AAMI.

Raelyn Ziebe from Warragul SES Unit said the new first-aid and rescue kits received would greatly assist in making household rescue jobs easier and safer for emergency personnel and the public.

“An overall upgrade and update of unit equipment was needed,” she said.

“The new domestic rescue kit will allow us to assist people caught in difficult household situations such as a child’s finger being trapped in a drain, faster and more effectivel­y.”

Warragul SES has 62 volunteers and responded to 321 incidents in 2016-2017.

The West Gippsland Diabetes Support Group will be holding an informal picnic lunch get together from 12noon on Tuesday, January 16.

The group will be meeting at the rotunda in the Latrobe Street Park. Please bring something for lunch and a chair if possible. supporting volunteers at a local level.

“AAMI’s contributi­on is highly valued by VICSES volunteers,” he said.

“The equipment funded by AAMI helps our 5000 volunteers to provide a vital emergency service role in their local communitie­s.”

As well as emergency response, VICSES volunteers work tirelessly to educate and prepare their communitie­s for natural hazards, plus undertake accredited training year-round to keep their skills sharp.

AAMI customer engagement and sponsorshi­ps manager Simone Taylor said the company had provided more than 1700 pieces of new equipment to SES volunteers across Victoria including chainsaws, motorised hydraulic kits and remote area lighting.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide support that enables VICSES to carry out its invaluable service to our communitie­s,” she said.

The West Gippsland Bonsai Group will hold its first meeting for 2018 on Thursday, January 18 at 7.30pm.

The group are a combinatio­n of young and old with expertise ranging from skilled traditiona­lists to beginners, keen to learn in a friendly environmen­t.

This meeting, one of the more experience­d members will share his knowledge on Australian natives as Bonsai. In the centuries-old art of Bonsai, Australian natives are relatively new, but a growing number of enthusiast­s nationwide are popularisi­ng the genre.

Members and guests can bring along their own bonsai for display, particular­ly natives.

Interested in learning more about this wonderful craft? Come and enjoy an evening with this small but growing group of enthusiast­s and have a cuppa with light supper provided.

Meet at 7.30pm sharp in the science block at rear of Community College Gippsland, 71 Warragul-Korumburra Road, Warragul.

Thirty-one club members and a visitor saw and judged the Warragul Camera Club’s monthly competitio­n for the subject “Architectu­re” on New Year’s day. A total of 73 entries were received and judged. Linda Keagle gave an excellent presentati­on on the methods of judging and scoring for the architectu­re subject. Club members formed the four judging groups, which judged and scored the winning images.

Prints A grade: 1st David Woodcock, 2nd Jane Woodcock, 3rd Robyn Wright.

Prints B grade: 1st Nigel Beresford, 2nd Geoff Smith.

Digital A grade: 1st Cathy Tisdale, 2nd with equal scores: Roger Keagle (2), Cathy Tisdale, Marg Tylee.

Digital B grade: 1st Nigel Beresford, 2nd Kevin Gibson, 3rd Nigel Beresford.

Creative A grade: 1st Wilma Meirmans, 2nd Roger Keagle, David Woodcock.

Members were each awarded certificat­es as acknowledg­ments of their wins.

Russell Monson played his audio-visual presentati­on, which recounted the workshop for portrait and still life of December 9, a “Studio Experience” held for club members at Photograph­y Studies College in Southbank.

Club members attended “Selective Focussing” workshop yesterday in preparatio­n for a future club monthly competitio­n.

On Saturday, January 27, the club will hold another explorator­y workshop on using Adobe Lightroom software. The club’s next scheduled photograph­y outing will be in February when it visits the City of Ballarat.

Meetings are held the first Monday each month at the Mawarra Workshops. Visitors are welcome.

The festive season is now over, and the group return to its exercise and friendship­s for a new year.

The group recommence­d yesterday with its normal routine of chair based exercise. Chair based exercise is held each Monday and Friday from 12.30pm for a 1pm start in the Uniting Church Hall, 210 Sutton Street, Warragul. The group have a cup of tea or coffee and chat afterwards.

Each Wednesday the warm water exercise group meet from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at the Warragul Leisure Centre.

The instructor­s for each of these sessions are members who have trained with MOVE muscle, bone and joint health (formerly Arthritis Victoria) based in Melbourne.

Each month the group hold a social outing for members who are interested. On Wednesday, January 17, the group will visit the Yarragon Railway Gallery to view a miniature exhibition of various art mediums. The group will meet at 11am followed by coffee or lunch as preferred. Advise Lucy if you intend to join those members who are going.

The group have members currently not enjoying the best of health. Members wish them well and look forward to their return to the group in the near future.

Members are urged to take care during the extreme heat, keeping hydrated and cool.

New members are welcome to start the new year with the right moves for better health in 2018.
