Sheep tagging funding win
Market report for 3rd and 4th January 2018 Wednesday Fat Sale 378 head Thursday Bull and Cow Sale, 30 bulls, 117 cows
Another year begins and to start it off a yarding of 378 head for the first fat sale. Demand was mixed amongst the categories when comparing to the last major sale of 2017. The heavier pens in the bullock and vealer sales struggled a little as buyers were chasing lighter bodies to start off. Steers and heifers were stronger and both recorded a rise in the average. The yard average started the year 6 cents easier. 25 bullocks topped at 259.6 and averaged 250.7, back 3. 30 heifers topped at 271.6 and averaged 242.5, up 5. 30 steers topped at 278.2 and averaged 253.7, up 9. 293 veal topped at 319.6 and averaged 277.9, back 10. On Thursday the bull and cow sale followed the easy starting trend. 30 bulls yarded made to 272.2 and averaged 217 cents. Also yarded were 117 cows which reached a top of 235 and averaged 191.5.

Thirteen Victorian saleyards are set for major changes with the state government providing assistance in the move towards mandatory electronic tagging of sheep and goats.
Saleyards in Pakenham, Leongatha, Sale, Bairnsdale, Colac, Warrnambool, Wycheproof, Ouyen, Swan Hill, Nhill, Horsham, Warracknabeal and Shepparton will receive grants to purchase and install new scanning equipment and software.
Saleyards are required to scan and upload data for all electronically tagged sheep and goats from March 31.
The funding follows the development of plans for each saleyard’s infrastructure requirements for electronic identification, following consultation with local agents, transporters and saleyard staff, often with assistance from specialist contractors.
Total infrastructure funding for these 13 saleyards comes to more than $1.5 million.
It follows a recent announcement that Hamilton Regional Livestock Exchange was the first major saleyard to receive a grant for electronic identification equipment.
Electronic identification is already boosting traceability and efficiency across the supply chain, further promoting excellence in agriculture production worldwide.
