Is your child ready for school?

Bellfield Speech Pathology is running an innovative School Holiday Group Program, for students of all ages, called ‘Speech to Writing’ starting Monday 22nd through to Friday 26 January 2018.

This program is to assist students to write more confidently by learning to put ideas into written sentences.

Additionally, students will develop personalised strategies for improving attention and concentration.

The group sessions provide a fantastic opportunity for students to target their language and literacy goals in an environment that better resembles a classroom.

Students are taught to recognise their own learning styles and are encouraged to become independent in developing strategies to support these.

They develop their ability to attend for longer periods and learn how to ignore distractions in the classroom.

When a child finds it difficult to manage what is expected of them in the classroom – often parents are not sure where to turn and what to do.

The teachers will implement strategies but there are times when things still remain difficult or behaviour is poor. So where can they turn or what else can they do?

Perhaps working with a speech pathologist may be the next step.

It is the role of the speech pathologist to collect information about the child’s developmental history and then do a comprehensive assessment that explores the following areas: following directions, recalling sentences, word association skills, understanding spoken paragraphs, word knowledge, word retrieval, formulating sentences, word structures and knowledge of sentences structures. All these areas of language support a child’s literacy development.

The speech pathologist will also listen to the child’s speech sounds and voice quality to determine if all of these areas are developing at the expected rate for their age.
