Market report for 10th and 11th January, 2018 Wednesday Fat Sale 403 head. Thursday Bull and Cow Sale, 59 bulls, 279 cows.

Demand varied across categories this week, with easier prices in saleyards across the state. Bullock numbers eased on Wednesday pulling prices back. A lighter number of heifers had buyers competing and pushed prices up. Steer numbers were steady and a lack of condition in the secondary pens eased this category. A few more vealers containing some well finished head remained steady. This week’s yard average improved 3 cents on last week to 271.1.

7 bullocks made to 252, back 7 and averaged 245.9, back 5. 19 heifers made to 284.6, up 13 and averaged 251, up 9. 32 steers made to 280.6, up 8 and averaged 247.3, back 6. 317 veal made to 318, steady and averaged 279, firm. 59 bulls were yarded on Thursday and demand was stronger with buyers keen to get a good supply. Although the top was back 4 cents to 268.6, the average lifted 5 cents to 222.3. Cows on the other hand slipped 9 cents with the average at 182.7. There were 279 on offer with the top back 3 cents to 232. The yard average eased 5 cents to 193.9.

Are you a Gippsland dairy farmer or advisor who already has a solid grasp of dairy nutrition and feeding management and are now looking to take your capabiliti­es to a higher level?

If so, the Advanced Nutrition in Action training program might be just what you are looking for.

The goal of the program is to enable you to improve herd nutrition practices on farm by providing you with the technical knowledge, problem solving and strategic planning skills, and tools to develop and implement appropriat­e, nutrition-related management strategies which support your personal and business goals.

Participan­ts will be selected based on their existing level of knowledge. This will be tested by a short online quiz.

Participat­ing in the Advanced Nutrition in Action training program will help you to:

Confidentl­y and competentl­y develop and implement appropriat­e, nutrition-related management strategies on farm with other members of the farm team to create change Effectivel­y apply the most up-to-date herd nutrition knowledge, tools and approaches to herd nutrition management on farm, aided by an enhanced understand­ing of how herd nutrition integrates with other components of the farm system (feedbase, herd productivi­ty, health and welfare, farm business management and people).

The program is for dairy farm owners, managers and advisors with a strong interest in nutrition who wish to take their capabiliti­es in dairy nutrition and feeding management to a higher level. (Advisors must do the program accompanie­d by a farmer - ideally one of their own clients).

To obtain maximum benefit from this advanced level program you will need to already have a solid grasp of herd nutrition and feeding management. To confirm this, you will need:

At least two years practical field experience as a dairy farmer or advisor

To have successful­ly completed an online pre-registrati­on quiz, comprising 25 multiple choice questions.

If the pre-entry requiremen­ts are not met, other nutrition programs are available to gain sufficient knowledge to participat­e in a later program. A nutrition fundamenta­ls course and nutrition-related informatio­n and tools on the DA website will be available.

Advanced Nutrition in Action training program participan­ts will be required to bring a laptop computer to each workshop for use in activities.

The workshops will be delivered by nutritioni­sts with relevant technical skills and qualificat­ions, extensive experience as a practicing farm nutrition advisor, and training skills and experience.

This trainer will be supported by a GippsDairy extension officer with solid group facilitati­on and administra­tion skills, who will act as support trainer and course coordinato­r.

The course, which will start in February 2018, will be broken into three two-day workshops spread over 15 weeks.
