Division 6

- By Adam Johnson

In division six Jindivick and Western Park were forced to forfeit due to low player numbers with the clash between Ellinbank and Iona the only one to go ahead.

Iona chose to send the home side in and a tight bowling performance saw the Eagles (8/134) restricted to just under four runs an over. Jaxon Notman led the scoring with an unbeaten 50.

Sean McCormack was the pick of the bowlers with 3/28. He received good support from James Turnbull and Lachlan Howard with 2/10 and 2/25 respectively.

The Swamp Tigers faced ten overs before the match was declared a draw.

Goannas win in over 60s

The Gippsland Goannas took an easy victory over Yarra Ranges in over 60 cricket at Seville.

Goannas captain Kevin Lanigan returned from injury and elected to bat.

Fred Debono and Ian Gibson played themselves in nicely, while Ray Smith and Alex Dowsett kept the runs ticking over.

Lanigan, Murray Moore, Neil Meredith, Ian Southall, Gordon Cowling and Graeme Freshwater all pushed the score along as the Goannas reached 217 for the loss of four wickets.

Wickets fell, catches were held, a run out was effected and the Yarra Valley innings fell apart, all out for 94.

Graeme Freshwater was pick of the bowlers with three wickets, with Cowling, Southall, Anton, Dowsett and Meredith the other wicket takers.

Moore, Anton and Gibson each took 2 catches, with a low, hard catch at short mid wicket to Moore being described as 'an Agrade catch'.

Several players were congratulated on their selection in state teams.

Lanigan will captain Victoria against South Australia on February 19, with Smith and Southall joining him in that team.

Southall will also travel for the annual over 60s match against Tasmania.

Goanna Peter Dell will keep wicket for the state over 70s team in the match against Tasmania, while Debono, Freshwater and Gibson will line up against South Australia.

The Goannas next game is a home game on Sunday next, January 21 against Essendon. This match will be played at Mirboo North, starting at 11am.

The Goannas will continue to train at the Glengarry nets on Wednesday from 4.45pm.
