Exciting win for Garfield

-

Garfield won an exciting three-shot contest over Moe in division five on Saturday.

However, it was the club’s only win for the day.

Division two: Garfield 83 lost to Moe 90.

Division five: Garfield (2) 78 defeated Morwell (3) 75.

Helene Newton’s team was level at 4/4 on the fourth. They won six of the next seven ends to be up 15/7 on the 11th and went into the break up by eight shots.

However, Morwell came back strongly, winning the first six ends when play resumed to see Garfield trail 15/19 on the 17th. Garfield won the next two ends but only singles – before Morwell won four of the last six ends.

Although Garfield tried hard, they lost to a stronger team on the day 21/27.

Bob Lamport’s team was up 7/0 on the second before Morwell drew level on the fifth. Although Garfield won the next with a two, Morwell took over and Garfield trailed 9/19 at the break.

Garfield won the first five ends but still was behind 16/19 on the 16th. They came home strongly, picking up 15 shots to nine to win 31/28. It was a good hard-fought game.

Les Pumphrey’s team started well and was still in front at the break. Morwell fought back to take the lead but Garfield regained it in the last few ends to win 26/20. Results: Helene Newton (skip), Ken Newton, Colin Mills and Cliff Stephens lost to L. Edge’s team 21/27. Bob Lamport (skip), Malcolm Newham, Don Knight and Wes Goodman won 31/28. Les Pumphrey (skip), Graeme Burton, Jim Boucher and Ron Saunders won 26/20.

Division six: Garfield (3) 33 lost to Trafalgar (3) 62.

Damian Brick’s team won the first end but Trafalgar won three of the next four. Garfield only gained two ends from there to trail 6/17 at the break.

Although Garfield held shots many times, they were unable to hold them with Trafalgar’s skip and third very strong players. Garfield lost to a much stronger team 10/41.

Charlie Borg’s team also won the first end and, although holding the shot at times, went into the break down 2/15.

Garfield handled the green better when play resumed and won the first five ends to level at 15/15 on the 17th. Trafalgar won five ends to Garfield’s three from there, but Garfield won 23/21 in a hard-fought game.
