Cameras target hotspots for dumped rubbish
Cameras will be installed at illegal dumping hotspots in Baw Baw Shire with funding received from the state government as part of its Victorian Litter Plan.
Baw Baw Shire received $10,000 funding from Sustainability Victoria to target littering in retail areas and illegal dumping in green spaces, with CCTV cameras to be installed at six hotspot locations in Baw Baw Shire.
The cameras will be installed at Edgars Road Longwarry, Lardner’s Track Drouin, Camp Hill Drouin, Prior Road and Settlement Road Drouin, Longwarry Road Drouin and Butlers Track Warragul.
The funded projects include cameras to catch illegal dumping, along with educational campaigns to help communities act to reduce both littering and illegal dumping.
A spokesperson for Baw Baw Shire Council said the installation of CCTV cameras at six locations aimed to reduce the amount of illegal dumping occurring.
“This intervention aims to be a short and long term solution by reducing the impacts of the illegal dumping now and to change people’s behaviours and attitudes to-wards illegal dumping in the future,” the spokesperson said.
Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing congratulated Baw Baw Shire Council for its grant, saying the funds will allow Drouin and Warragul to contribute to Victoria’s ongoing excellent record for reducing litter.
“Congratulations to Baw Baw Shire Council for taking the lead in preventing and managing litter and illegal dumping,” she said.
