Federation Training

Building on over 85 years’ experience in training and education, Federation Training is Gippsland’s local TAFE.

With 10 campuses from Melbourne’s outer east throughout West and Central Gippsland to Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland, Federation Training provides local learning opportunities for vocational education students across the Gippsland region with a diverse range of training programs and specially designed learning environments.

Federation Training provides its students with the opportunity to get hands-on and develop real skills and experience in their chosen industry in uniquely regional educational locations.

Supporting students during their time at TAFE is a critical activity and with the assistance of Victorian State Government Community Service Funding, a number of important student assistance positions have been created to deliver focused student support services within the classroom.

Offering guidance to students with individual and diverse needs, three full-time student services advisors and 14 learning support assistants are now spread throughout the institute’s 10 campuses and across six local government areas in Gippsland.

Student needs could include help in liaising with various in-house services, external provision of counselling and financial assistance or simply providing points of contact for students wanting a helping hand as they undertake their studies.

Successful individual stories are emerging at Federation Training including a student for whom English was not her first language. The student was studying early childhood education and worked with a learning support assistant one-on-one during the 2017 academic year.

Another student undertaking the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) had additional caring responsibilities at home. The student was experiencing difficulty completing assessments and attending classes. The Learning Support Assistant also liaised with relevant teaching staff to work with the student to develop a study plan schedule to ensure full engagement in study and attend to personal caring responsibilities. At the end of the 2017 academic year, the student completed the Intermediate VCAL certificate and is looking forward to go onto Senior VCAL in 2018.

These are two individual case studies highlighting the engagement and student support services available at Federation Training, designed to encourage students to a successful completion of their studies and provide pathways to a career in their chosen field.

A TAFE education can take you anywhere and Federation Training is Gippsland’s own TAFE – your local TAFE.
