Two wins for Garfield

Garfield had two wins and a loss in round 12 of WGBD pennant on Saturday.

Division two: Garfield lost to Yallourn (2) 72/98.

Division five: Garfield defeated Traralgon RSL 91/58.

Helene Newton’s team was down early. They had shots at times but were unable to hold them, going into the break down 5/20. After being still well down on the 16th, Garfield fought back and won seven of the final nine ends. However, they lost to a stronger team 20/29.

Bob Lamport’s team got away to a flying start, up 10/0 on the third end. RSL fought back, picking up five ends but still trailed 6/18 at the break. When play resumed, it was good and hard fought bowls. RSL was only able to get singles as Garfield drew away for a great 43/14 win.

Les Pumphrey’s team also had a great start, winning the first eight ends to lead 10/0. They were up 12/5 at the break. It was even from that point, both teams winning six ends. However, Garfield was too strong and had set up a great win, 28/15. Results: Helene Newton (skip), (2) (3) Cliff Stephens, Jan Johnson and Jim Power lost to T. Brand’s team 20/29. Bob Lamport (skip), Colin Mills, Don Knight and Wes Goodman won 43/14. Les Pumphrey (skip), Graeme Burton, Jim Boucher and Ron Saunders won 28/15.

Division six: Garfield defeated Yallourn (5) 63/39.

Damian Brick’s team started well, up 9/0 on the third end. Teams went end for end but Garfield went into the break up 14/7 after Yallourn scored mainly singles. Although Yallourn continued to try hard, they were unable to catch Garfield who won 35/17.

Charlie Borg’s team was up 7/1 on the third end. A tight game followed, with both teams winning five ends apiece. Garfield was up 19/9 on the 13th but Yallourn won three of the next four ends to get within five shots on the 17th. Garfield settled and went on to win a hard fought game, 28/22. Results: Damian Brick (skip), Jill Rouse, Alan Wilson and Phil Humphreys won 35/17. Charlie Borg (skip), Judy Pocklingto­n, Maureen Lamport and Malcolm Newman won 28/22. (3)
