Warragul & Drouin Gazette

Division 2

- By Sam Laffy

Drouin (146) def. Western Park (142): Drouin have kept their slim finals chances alive thanks to a stunning four-run win over Western Park – with the Hawks claiming a late flurry of wickets to emerge victorious in a nailbiting encounter.

The Warriors began the day requiring 146 to win, but their hopes of claiming the points were soon in disarray, with the top order struggling against the accurate bowling of Charlie Wans (4-28 from seven) and Andrew Harrison.

Jack Barnes – whose nous as captain is no doubt under question following his second loss in as many games in charge – fell to the very first ball of the innings, and Angus Geals (0), Luke Gilbert (7) and Mathew Wakefield (21) soon followed.

Thankfully for Western Park, Wil Cole (20) and Danny Sheehan (an excellent gritty knock of 55) combined to somewhat rescue the run-chase and their efforts put the Warriors in a potentially winning position.

Enter Regan Hodge. Ignoring the trying conditions, Hodge ran rampant in the latter part of the innings, snaring the final four wickets to fall in a spell that demonstrated nagging accuracy, and just enough sideways movement to capture the edge of the tailender’s bats – with Western Park crumbling to be all out for 142 in the 41st over.

Titans fight for win

Garfield-Tynong (7-191) def. Hallora (9-184): Garfield-Tynong moved a game clear of Warragul in seventh place on the table – and in the process prevented Hallora from almost sealing a finals berth – thanks to a fighting three-wicket win at the weekend.

Facing a potentially tricky chase of 184, the Titans were in early trouble against the new-ball duo of Jai and Caleb Serong, with the scoreboard reading 2-24 after the departures of Thomas Brown (20) and Jason Skobla (0).

However, Tate Burgmann took the game into his hands and decreed that there would be no honourable loss for GarfieldTynong in this encounter, and his sensational knock of 80 kept the Titans in the game throughout the afternoon.

With Toby Wallace (1-18 off 11) and Steven Fox (2-27 from 14) maintaining the pressure with the ball, Burgmann called upon his experience and powerful repertoire of shots to counter-attack.
