What exactly do Girl Guides do at their weekly unit meetings?

Guiding has changed in some respects but basically is still a Girl’s movement encouraging Girls to become strong independent young women. Read on to see what a Senior Girl Guide does on a weekly basis.

“During 2017 the Warragul Senior Girl Guides would hold a meeting every Wednesday for four terms, sometimes even doing extra activities on a weekend.

“On our regular meeting nights we would do so many different things like world nights - my favorite was Irish night, where we dressed up and played potato bowling it was so much fun.

“Some girls plan nights so they can earn badges, we play wide games, and even hike around Warragul with mattresses on our heads! We might go flying down a hill on a block of ice. We might try orienteering or have people visit the hall to talk about things like animal care or we might have a visit from a Girl Guide from England.

“Our extra activities include going to awesomely fun places like camps to Melbourne where we went ice skating and stayed in a guide hall in Melbourne or a whole unit camp where all the age groups went on a camp to Geelong and we got to help the younger girls.

“My personal favorite camp was to Brittania Park where only a few girls went and we got to stay in a triangle shaped house.

“We also camp outdoors, go to jump crazy, laser tag and community events like Winterfest.

“Service is one of the Guiding Fundamentals and we have made service fun with things like a Bake Sale for Red Nose day, spending an afternoon at Fairview homes and the ANZAC march.

“We also still uphold other Guiding traditions like knot work and earning badges.

“This year some of the girls are going to the Sydney Jamboree where girls from all over Australia will be getting together to do lots of fun things together like day trips to the Sydney attractions, hiking and high ropes days and some people are even going to climb the Sydney Harbor Bridge!

“We are currently doing lots of fundraising to help get us to Sydney so if you see us come and say hello!

“I would recommend all girls giving Guiding a go. For me personally, Girl Guides has given me more confidence to talk in groups, to try new things but most importantly to become a strong independent future leader.”
