Pat Fraser-Aursich wins state singles

Neerim District’s Pat Fraser-Aurisch defeated Drouin’s Denise Hamilton in the women’s state singles at Drouin on Monday last.

An interestin­g match was played in warm conditions before the heat settled in.

Meanwhile, Traralgon’s Neville Brown had a good win over Drouin’s Garry Johnson in the men’s state singles.

The match was played in a front of a good crowd as it started after the Drouin bowls afternoon.

After getting away to an early 14 - 6 lead, Brown allowed Johnson to get back in to the game with a series of minimum length ends.

Johnson fought his way back and took a handy lead before Brown steadied to win narrowly. Men’s results: Round 1: J McCausland (Trafalgar) d G Lockett (Drouin), K Lovett (Yallourn) d M Yacoub (Traralgon), V McIlwain (Traralgon) d K Mooney (Traralgon).

Round 2: G Johnson (Drouin) d D Gatewood (Warragul), J McCausland d K Lovett, V McIlwain d M Smith (Warragul), N Brown (Traralgon) d T Sullivan (Warragul).

Round 3: G Johnson d J McCausland, N Brown d V McIlwain.

Ferrari by single shot

Matt Ferrari drew shot with his last bowls to help Traralgon win the West Gippsland Bowls Division men’s state fours by a single shot.

Ferrari made the fifth shot after his team was four shots down heading into the last end.

Earlier Ferrari had been up 11 - 3 before John Cornish of Trafalgar rolled a series of very short ends close to the ditch, and the Matt Schreyer skipped team fought their way back to lead by four going in to the last end. Result: Ian Hilsley, Ian Kirkup, Michael Yaoub, Matt Ferrarri (Traralgon) d John Cornish (Trafalgar), John Leighton, Gary Johnson, Matt Schreyer (Drouin) 18-17.

WGBD picks teams

West Gippsland Bowls Division has selected its teams to take on South Gippsland in round robin matches to determine representa­tive for the Strzelecki region.

The men’s team will play at Traralgon on Sunday, with the teams as follows:

Patrick Lewis (Yallourn), Michael Yacoub (Traralgon), Matt Ferrari (Traralgon) and Ian Kirkup (Traralgon, skip).

Ron Witton (Morwell Club), Vin McIlwain (Traralgon), Wayne Lynch (Morwell Club), Neville Brown (Traralgon, skip).

Scott Jones (Trafalgar), James McCausland (Trafalgar, James Scullin (Traralgon), Rod Smith (Morwell Club, skip).

Players are requested to be in attendance by 8.45am to allow for an 9.30am roll up.

Lunch will be provided, and West Gippsland shirts will be supplied. Players are asked to wear white trousers or shorts.

The women’s round robin will be played at Drouin on Thursday, February 15 with the teams as follows:

Maureen Leighton (skip), Sheryl Atkinson, Pauline Appleyard, Samantha Atkinson (all of Drouin).

Denise Hamilton (Drouin), Joanne Michaels (Yallourn), Kathy Smiles (Traralgon RSL), Val Rodgers (Moe).

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (Neerim District), Joan Goldie (Yallourn), Karren Sheers (Neerim District) Chris O’Reilly (Moe).

Players are requested to be in attendance by 8.45am to allow for an 9.30am roll up.

Lunch will be provided, and West Gippsland shirts will be supplied. Players are asked to wear white shorts, skirts or slacks.

The WGBD thanked players who indicated their availabili­ty but were not selected.
