Mixed results for Garfield

Garfield had mixed results in round 13 of West Gippsland Bowls Division Saturday pennant.

Division five came home from Morwell with three wins, for victory 82/63 overall, while division six suffered two losses at Longwarry to go down 54/46. Division 5 Les Pumphrey’s team drew level on the second and won six of the next eight ends to be up 15/10 just before tea.

The game drew level at 15/15 on the 13th. It was a good hardfought game from there with Garfield getting seven ends to Morwell’s six. Garfield went on to win 27/26.

Charlie Borg’s team played well to draw level twice and then draw away to be 10/5 up at tea.

Morwell came home strongly to be level at 20/20 on the 24th, but Garfield got up to win 22/20.

In a hard-fought game with one team getting away early and the other coming home strong, Bob Lamport’s team got away to a flying start to be up 8/0 on the fourth.

Garfield only lost three singles from there and went in at the break up 18/3. Although Morwell tried hard, they were no match for Garfield on the day with Garfield winning 33/17. Results: Les Phumphrey (s), Graeme Burton, Jim Boucher and Ron Saunders won 27/26.

Charlie Borg (s), Helene Newton, Ken Newton, Cliff Stephens won 22/20.

Bob Lamport (s), Malcolm Newman, Don Knight and Wes Goodman won 33/17. Division six Damian Brick’s team started slowly down 1/5 on the fifth but won next four ends to be up a shot on the ninth.

Both teams got two ends each but Garfield were still just down on the 13th.

Garfield took lead on the 14th and were still up 14/11 on the 19th, but Longwarry drew level at 14/14 on the 21st.

Although Garfield held shots at times they could not hold them, and Longwarry drew away to win 23/17.

Judy Pocklingto­n’s team started well up 8/0 on the second, but Longwarry came back strongly to be up by six shots on the seventh.

Garfield fought back to be just down by one on the 13th. The game was level three times from there but Longwarry took lead on the 19th to be up 22/21.

Garfield kept trying and drew level at 29/29 on the 24th, but Longwarry got up to win 31/29 in a hard fought game by all. Results: Damian Brick (s), Isabell Deane, Alan Wilson and Phil Humphreys lost to Brian Mason’s team 17/23. Judy Pocklingto­n (s), Maureen Lamport, Jill Rouse and Joe Deane lost to Gerry Wakefield’s team 29/31.
