Pilates the secret to good health

-

Longwarry’s Valda Mace attributes weekly Pilates exercises as her secret to maintaining health and fitness into her later years of life.

Valda recently celebrated her 90th birthday and was recognised for her inspirational story by her colleagues.

Having suffered a fall 14 years ago that badly damaged her hip, a physiotherapist recommended Valda undertake Pilates as part of her rehabilitation.

She was a keen golfer at Drouin Golf Club and there was the possibility that she might not be able to return to golf, but slowly but surely she returned to full mobility and is still playing golf twice a week.

Metal sculpture artist Laurie Collins, who also undertakes Pilates, created a personal trophy to present to Valda as the oldest member of the class and an inspiration to others.

Valda’s pilates director Gillian Foks said Valda was an inspiration and true example of commitment to pilates, giving her the opportunity to live life to the fullest into her later years.

“Valda loves her Pilates and over the 14 years she has had many years of 100 per cent attendance, therefore very little sickness,” she said.

“Continuity is so important to maintain awareness of balance, strength and flexibility, especially for the older population, and Valda aims to practice some Pilates exercises each day to achieve this.

“She has amazing core strength for her age and often out works younger members of her class.”

Valda intends to continue Pilates for as long as she can.
