Garfield still in hunt

Garfield’s two teams remain in the hunt for premiershi­p titles despite mixed results on Saturday.

Division five: Garfield lost to Morwell Club 58/90.

Playing at Moe, Garfield had three rink losses for an overall 32-shot loss.

Les Pumphrey’s team was level at 2/2 on the third, gaining the lead on the fifth. It was a tight game from there. Morwell Club took the lead on the 11th but Garfield regained it just before the break to be 13/12.

Morwell Club came back strongly, taking the lead on the 16th and not looking back. Although Garfield tried hard, they lost to a much stronger team on the day. The score was 18/31.

Bob Lamport’s team was level at 3/3 on the third. They took the lead on the next end and held it until the seventh. However, Morwell Club took over from there and Garfield went into the break trailing 12/17. Garfield tried hard and won seven ends to Morwell Club’s five after the break, but they lost to a more consistent team. Garfield lost 23/31.

Colin Mills’ team started slowly, down 0/8 on the third. They came back strongly, winning the next four ends to be down by three on the seventh. It became a tight game as teams went end for end. Garfield trailed 11/13 at the break.

The game changed when play resumed. Morwell Club took over, winning all but three ends as Garfield lost 17/28. Results: Les Pumphrey (skip), Graeme Burton, Jim Boucher and Ron Saunders lost to A. Ralls’ team 18/31. Bob Lamport (skip), Malcolm Newman, Don Knight and Wes Goodman lost to H. McCurley’s team 23/31. Colin Mills (skip), Helene Newton, Ken Newton and Cliff Stephens lost 17/28.

Division six: Garfield defeated Trafalgar 48/41.

Playing at Moe, Garfield had one win and one loss but won overall by seven shots.

Damian Brick’s team started slowly but picked up before the break. It became a tight game as the teams went end for end. Garfield held shots at times but were unable to keep them. However, they kept trying in a three-shot loss, 21/24.

Judy Pocklingto­n’s team was in a close contest early but drew away. Although Trafalgar tried hard, Garfield held the lead at the break and kept going when play resumed for a 10-shot win, 27/17. Results: Damian Brick (skip), Isabell Deane, Alan Wilson and Phil Humphreys lost 21/24. Judy Pocklingto­n (skip), Maureen Lamport, Joe Deane and Jill Rouse won 27/17.

Tuesday

Division three: Garfield defeated Yarragon 92/48.

Garfield was at home to Yarragon, with three rink wins securing a large overall win.

Maureen Lamport’s team had a tight game early but drew away for a good win. Judy Pocklingto­n’s team was down early but caught up midway before securing a hard fought win. Jill Rouse’s team had a close battle early but came home strongly for a good win.
