Red Rattler hay bales win for Nilma school

-

Creative designs were on display for the first hay bale competition held at the Warragul Show.

Warragul Show secretary Tonnie Schipper said the idea to create a junior competition arose after a volunteer member used hay bale designs as a means to advertise last year’s show.

“As an extension of that we thought it would be a good idea to get the schools involved,” she said. “The students totally enjoyed it. “One school said to us that they had a fun time; students had different roles from design to organising materials.”

Seven schools took part in the competition, with each receiving a prize thanks to strong support from local business.

With the competition decided by a public vote and Facebook poll, it was Nilma Primary School who came out on top with their ‘Red Rattler’ hay bale ute.

Students assisted with the planning and assembly of all recycled parts, with the end result a celebration of a collective creation.

Other schools to create impressive designs were Labertouche Primary School, Warragul and District Specialist School, Neerim District Rural Primary School, Ellinbank Primary School, Warragul Primary School and Bona Vista Primary School.

Ms Schipper said it was hoped the competition could run again next year following the success of the event.

Meanwhile, students also displayed their creative talents in the exhibition building.

Nilma Primary School students had been busy creating works in line the theme, outer space.

The school’s kitchen garden also provided students with a variety of fruit and vegetables and a good harvest for the show.
