Warragul pair win doubles

Warragul players Julie Beasley and Mary Cornwall combined to take out the section two title at Wonthaggi Croquet Club’s annual open doubles tournament.

Held over two days, each section competed in four games on each day but on different courts. Those familiar with the Wonthaggi courts will understand the challenge that presented to all players.

With competitor­s coming from across Gippsland, all matches were fiercely contested, with the Warragul combinatio­n coming out on top over home club members Virginia and Brian Wheeler in section two.

Ray Ball of Phillip Island combined with Gerry Kool of Wonthaggi to win section one ahead of Peter Goldstraw and Deirdre Lebbon of Sale.

Rubies into second

Rubies moved clear in second-place on the Warragul Thursday women’s competitio­n ladder with victory over Opals in round 15.

Pearls managed to force a draw with Emeralds, moving them one point clear from the bottom of the ladder.

Despite having the bye, Diamonds maintain a healthy advantage at the top of the table and are all but assured of taking the title. Results: Rubies 3/29 d Opals 3/24, Emeralds 3/23 drew Pearls 3/23, Diamonds bye.

Ladder: Diamonds 90, Rubies 59, Emeralds 54, Pearls 49, Opals 48.
