Longwarry win Tuesday pennant

Longwarry’s Tuesday pennant team have taken out the divison four West Gippsland Bowls Division mid-week grand final, comfortabl­y accounting for Traralgon by 21 shots.

Longwarry were able to turn the tables after falling to Traralgon in the second semi final two weeks ago.

The match was played in perfect conditions at Yarragon. The club thanked Yarragon’s small team of volunteers for producing a great green.

It is possible that the Longwarry team could move up a division next season should they be able to recruit more women. Results: Longwarry 56 defeated Traralgon 35: Eddie Bluck, Fred Pitcher, Eileen Sparks and Judy Eastwell (skip) defeated J Hale’s team 23/20.

Longwarry got off to a flying start and by end 17 were leading by 17 shots.

Traralgon started to play some good bowls and won the last eight ends, but Longwarry had done the damage early and held on to win by three shots.

Lorna Sheedy, Gerry Wakefield, Laurel Purvis and Vicki Hanks (Skip) defeated H Muscal’s team 33/15.

In a close game early, with scores level by end seven, Longwarry played some great bowls to pick up multiple shots on most ends to record a convincing 18 shot win.

With skip Victoria fresh from her division three win, she led her team to victory.

Narrow losses

Meanwhile, Trafalgar and Garfield suffered heartbreak in their respective divisions.

While it was a nive sunny day, a blustery wind blowing up made bowling interestin­g.

Trafalgar fell to Yallourn by just eight shots in the division one final, while Garfield went down by just four shots in a thrilling division three grand final against Morwell Club.

Trafalgar were valiant against Yallourn in their first division one grand final since 1980, trying their best against an experience­d side.

Morwell Club also prevailed in division two, accounting for Yallourn. Results: Division 1: Yallourn 69 d Trafalgar 61. Division 2: Morwell Club 78 d Yallourn 2 57. Division 3: Morwell Club 2 66 d Garfield 62. Division 4: Longwarry 56 d Traralgon 35.

West take on South

West Gippsland Bowls Division division one premiershi­p teams will take on the best South Gippsland has to offer in west and south division premiershi­p play offs this week.

Trararlgon will take on Phillip Island at Trafalgar onSaturday, with play commencing at 12.30pm.

Yallourn will host the winner of the South Gippsland grand final between Phillip Island and Leongatha on Tuesday, March 27.

The match will be played at Yarragon with roll up at 9.30am.
