Top 5 tips for safe Easter trips
With the Easter long-weekend upon us, it's time to put safety front and centre.
The Easter holidays in Australia offer anything but predictable weather conditions, particularly for us folk in the more southern parts.
On Good Friday, our roads become clogged like no other. It can be a little frustrating when all you want to do is get there! But it’s imperative you take your time and get there safely.
Here are our top tips for staying safe – and sane – this Easter long weekend:
1. Pack safe
To ensure everyone is safe, make sure your car is packed carefully. Make use of safety nets and anchor points, or try to keep as many of your belongings in the boot, glovebox or centre console as you can. In an emergency, even small items can impact occupants with massive force, so think ahead and pack safe.
2. People fuel
Hungry passengers are the worst! Make sure you take some fruit, snacks and water on your trip to maintain energy levels. It’s also a good idea to pack towels, tissues and sick bags, too. Little kids need entertainment to remain occupied, so bring the music, or the iPad. It’ll save your sanity.
3. Get your car serviced
If you’re heading on a longer trip, it pays to have the car looked over by a qualified mechanic. If a service is looming, then get it done before you head off. Make sure your tyres are in good condition and properly inflated (including the spare!), and that all the vital fluids are correctly topped-up. In case the worst happens, make sure your roadside assistance plan and insurance are up to date.
4. Take your time
Fatigue is a killer, so schedule breaks at least every two hours. It’s not only a great way of keeping your mind fresh, but it’ll help the kids stretch their legs, too. In most states, free tea and coffee breaks are provided at larger centres, so plan ahead, get out, stretch your legs and re-energise.
5. Know where you’re going
Spend a little time studying your route before you depart. You may know where you’re going, but road conditions can change. It’s a great idea to check for roadworks, accidents, special events and the like. After all, these can derail the best laid plans.
