Snapshot of the past
A photograph showing Governor General Lord Forster approaching the cenotaph in Warragul for the official opening on April 9, 1923.
Governor General Lord Forster is captured travelling in a vice regal motor vehicle, with the crown displayed on its front, in Smith Street. The vehicle is flanked by mounted soldiers.
The Argus reported a large crowd gathered as the memorial to fallen soldiers who volunteered from the Warragul district was unveiled.
The memorial was described as nearly 30ft in height and built of granite embellished with wreaths of immortelles in bronze. It contained 62 names and cost £900.
Note the Royal Hotel (now La Passion) and Emry’s General Merchant and Drapery Store (now Roylaines) on the left of the photograph.
