Winter chills can mean stiff joints for us all

-

It's been great to have some rain for the garden, however the return of the cold weather means it is time to think about arthritis and our pets.

You may notice your dogs are becoming a little stiff when they get up or that your cat no longer wants to jump.

Maybe your pet is just sleeping more and we call this ‘old age’.

Animals often hide their discomfort and may already be in some pain once they actually start to show us signs of arthritis.

Arthritis is caused by the reduced production of cartilage and synovial (joint) fluid and an increase in cartilage degradation in the joint.

This results in bones rubbing together, causing a constant pain, swelling and reduced function of the joint.

There is no cure for arthritis however there are ways in which we can manage the disease to help maintain your pet's quality of life.

Regular gentle exercise or hydrotherapy can help maintain good mobility, ideal weight and general health.

Keep your pets warm at night with bedding, coat or a heating pad.

Supplementing with pet glucosamine and chondroitin products, as well as Omega-3 oil orally, have been proven to help with arthritic pain and inflammation.

We can control the progression of arthritis with regular Pentosan or Cartrophen injections under the skin, and alleviate pain with oral medications.

With all health issues, early intervention can assist with better management of the disease and help to alleviate pain that your pet may be experiencing.

Arthritic pets can have pain and difficulties when climbing into cars or being placed in pet carriers, so Our Pet Mobile Vet comes to you.

We assess your pet’s joints and general health, provide advice, any necessary blood tests and dispense medications for your fur babies, in the comfort of your own home. Contact 0438 535 878 to book your home visit.
