Hockey canteen receives upgrade
Who hasn’t enjoyed a hot drink or a snack after playing or watching a gruelling match of hockey?
The synthetic hockey turf facility in Drouin sees about 700 players and officials per week and a growing amount of supporters and spectators.
When the little canteen at the Bill Rumble Pavilion was deemed as "non-compliant", Drouin and District Community Bank was one of the donors who came to the rescue with a grant towards a much needed refurbishment.
The other generous donors were Drouin Lions Club, Drouin Rotary, Bellbird Park Committee of Management, and Bellbird Park Synthetic Field Committee of Management.
Much time, effort and hard labour were put into the renovation of this great little canteen, and the West Gippsland Hockey Association are grateful to the people and organisations who made this possible.
The project was led and coordinated by WGHA treasurer Tracey Taylor.
Tracey handled the large number of stakeholders as project manager putting in hours of volunteer time.
Local builder Chris Taylor also put in tireless hours of volunteer work (he didn’t have much of a choice really with his wife coordinating).
He demolished, plastered, painted, woodworked, put down flooring and did anything else he was asked to do.
He put four or five weekends of work into this renovation and deserves much of the praise for the way it has turned out.
Colin Parnell contributed his physical tradesmanship and as WGHA president supplied hands on approval for each and every payment and expense.
The Association thanked the local businesses who supported this venture by discounting their products or donating labour and time to get things done.
The canteen provides for the hockey community on Friday nights and weekends. It is staffed by willing volunteers and manager, Tracey Taylor.
On offer are barista coffee, hearty soups, bakery items, hot food and snacks and drinks.
The hockey community is hugely appreciative of the support they have received for this project.
