Baw Baw Shire council through its delegate to the MAV Cr Jessica O’Donnell supported actions on those issues at the meeting.

Cr O’Donnell said councils were seeking financial support for regional waste and resource recovery treatment and processing to minimise the amount of waste going to landfill and reduce distances waste had to be transporte­d.

The land fill levy imposed on councils by the State Government came under fire with the conference voting to seek advice on the legality of the government withholdin­g funds from the levy and not allocating them for the purpose they were collected and whether councils would withhold levies until there was a plan for how the money is to be spent.

The MAV also wants the government to allocate $100 million from the $2 billion it received from the sale of Victoria’s shareholdi­ng in Snowy Hydro to develop recycling facilities and help councils meet the costs to ratepayers of altered recycling market conditions, notably China’s decision to reject materials from Australia.

Other waste related resolution­s adopted by the MAV related to the introducti­on of a deposit scheme for containers and significan­t increases in penalties for littering offences.

Cr O’Donnell said she also supported on Baw Baw’s behalf the State government adopting a public health approach to reduce harm caused by electronic gaming machines (pokies), further reducing cash withdrawal limits at gaming venues and giving local government

A Toyota Landcruise­r was stolen from a Hallora property last week.

The theft occurred at 3.30am on Sunday May 20th when a male offender gained entry to a shed on a rural property in Torwood-Topiram Rd.

Police said the offender located a set of keys in the shed and then stolen the vehicle.
