Snapshot of the past

-

A photograph of radio station 3UL in Victoria St, Warragul in the 1970s.

Note the cream marble frontage as well as parking meter and old rubbish bin located in the street outside.

This was the second premises of 3UL – the first also being in Victoria St. It had an atrium near its entrance with studios located at the rear of the building.

This building is today home of Warragul Newspower.

Radio station 3UL began broadcasting on May 18, 1937. The first programme from the station included a recital by the Warragul band.

It was the Central Gippsland unit of Melbourne’s Argus Broadcasting Services, serving 16,500 licence-holders within a 40-mile radius of Warragul.

When Melbourne’s Argus Services closed in 1957, Broadcasting Associated Broadcasting Services was developed to run 3UL. 3UL operated from premises in Victoria St for many years before relocating to Warragul-Korumburra Rd in 1980. After a stint in the Latrobe Valley, the radio station returned to Warragul and its named changed from 3UL to 3GG.

The station underwent another change of ownership in February 2015 and was purchased by Capital Radio Network.

The station recently moved to new premises in Smith St, near the West Gippsland Medical Clinic.
