Juniors give Warragul top start

-

The two junior sides gave Warragul a winning start to the day at Maffra.

The Under 16 fourths got things rolling with a thrilling one-point win in a match between sides that had only one win each before Saturday.

The Gulls’ cause was helped by Maffra’s inaccuracy with scores at the finish 4-7 to 3-12.

Maffra had 1-12 on the board at three-quarter time but led by one point.

However, Warragul, after a scoreless third term, fought persistently to add 2-2 to 2-0 and sneak home.

Jake Kallady, Matthew Boyes, Connor ives, Charlie Stern, Harry Notman and Beau Cusden led the way in a great win.

Notman, Stern, Cooper Alger and Matthew Pecoraro kicked the Gulls’ goals.

In a thirds game important for both sides finals’ chances Warragul overran Maffra in a brilliant performance to win 10-13 to 3-8.

It kept the Gulls in fourth place on the ladder ahead of Traralgon and Sale on percentage and Maffra slipped a game behind them and to 7th spot.

Fraser Phillips, Sam Fennell, Cooper Robbins, Josh Notman, Will Pyle and Bailey Quaife were named best but there were plenty of others that made big contributions to an overall top team effort.

Phillips topped his game with three goals, Darcy Norton got two and Pyle, Connor Williamson, Mason McGarrity, Aaron Baxter and Will Gown kicked single goals.
