Uptake for short term registration

-

Motorists in Baw Baw Shire have had amongst the highest uptake of short-term vehicle registration in Gippsland since its introduction in January last year.

Since short term registration was introduced in January, more than 32,000 motorists in Gippsland have signed up for new three or six-month registration options.

In Baw Baw Shire 6728 people have taken up a shortterm registration option, behind only Latrobe City with 8204 short term registrations. The three-month registration option had a take up of 3620 in Baw Baw Shire, while 3108 took up the six-month option.

Across Victoria, more than 24,000 people are signing up to the new short-term vehicle registrations each week.

Of the eligible vehicle owners who have opted for the budget friendly short-term registration options, 51 per cent have selected the three-month option and 49 per cent have chosen to register their vehicles for six months.

The flexible payment option is proving most popular with the 26-35 year age group.

Owners of cars, utes, vans, motorcycles and other light vehicles are now able to make the switch to shorter term registration or continue with an annual registration fee by creating a myVicRoads account.

Creating a myVicRoads online account will allow owners to choose the registration option that suits them and receive electronic reminders when their registration is due.

Under the new arrangements an average threemonth registration costs $200.20 while an average six-month registration costs $400.40, compared to an average annual fee of $800.80.

The state government has invested $12 million to upgrade VicRoads registration systems, paving the way for short term registration.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said short-term registration options were relieving financial pressure for thousands of families in Gippsland by giving them the flexibility to choose a payment plan that suits their needs.

“More than half a million Victorians are experiencing the welcome relief of choosing more flexible and easy registration options and that’s something that’s helping budgets across Gippsland and across the state,” she said.
