One-point loss ends finals bid

-

A loss in a game they could have won, and probably should have, against Leongatha on Saturday has virtually ended hopes of Warragul thirds sneaking to the “five”.

They’d have to win all three remaining games including against top five sides Bairnsdale and Sale and rely on Leongatha, that has the bye next week, losing to both of those sides in its remaining games.

The Gulls went down by one-point to Leongatha despite having four more scoring shots.

Final scores were 95 to 8-10, Warragul failing to make the most of their opportunities in the third quarter when they kicked 1-5.

It had been a close game all the way.

There was only two points between the sides at quarter time, scores were level midway and Leongatha went into the last term with a one-point lead.

It was a terrific contest in the final quarter, each side adding 2-1.

Eddie McGillivray was a stand-out for the Gulls capping off his game with three goals.

Sam Fennell, Patrick Mulqueen, Rhys Chambers and Cooper Robbins were others to shine.

Joshua Notman kicked two goals and Fennell, Darcy Norton and Ryley Green got a goal each.

Warragul’s fourths came up against a determined Leongatha still with a chance of grabbing 5th place.

The young Gulls were on the back foot from early on and went down 12-14 to 34 at the siren.

Better players were Jai Serong, Cooper Alger, Matthew Boyles, Beau Cusden, Damian Handley and Brendan Coates.

The goals were kicked by Harry Notman, Handley and Alger.
