Teams battle hard for finals

With the final round of the Warragul and District Junior Football League’s home and away season over, many teams have battled hard to cement their place in the finals.

The eliminatio­n and qualifying finals will be held on Saturday at Drouin Recreation Reserve for the under 12s and under 14s while the under 10s will play at Eastern Park on Sunday. Colts v Yarragon Under 10 After a scoreless and closely contested first quarter both teams managed to get on the board in the second.

Yarragon fired up for the third and set up a great last quarter.

In the end Yarragon were too strong in a great game of football to finish off the season. Under 12 Yarragon and Colts played consistent footy throughout the game.

Yarragon controlled the scoreboard however Colts fought hard. Under 14 The last game of the season saw a well contested game and a well fought battle for the ball.

Yarragon were just too strong for the Colts, running away with a win.

Warranor v Buln Buln Under 10 Warranor kicked straight early with their lead never threatened.

Warranor’s Joel Kennon and Charlie Armour played their 50th games. Under 12 The game started with both teams keen to make their mark.

Buln showed great determinat­ion but Warranor were too strong on the day.

Warranor’s Lucas Carter played his 75th game. Under 14 Buln Buln didn’t make it easy for Warranor to put scores on the board as both teams played hard at the football.

Warranor moved the ball well and had to get it past a strong Buln Buln defence for a well-deserved win.

Longwarry v The Bulls Under 10 The game was a tight contest in the first quarter which saw the Bulls restricted to only two minors.

Longwarry threatened but Bulls dominated the final three quarters and took out a clear win. Under 12 Tough contests made it hard for Longwarry to score.

Both sides went in hard in the first quarter but the Bulls pulled away in the second to eventually take out the win. Under 14 Longwarry lent an undermanne­d Bulls team some players, but the Crows were too strong.

Hallora v Neerim District Under 10 In perfect playing conditions the play was even with both teams leading well for the ball.

Hallora fought hard and wanted the win, taking the game with a lead. Under 12 The first half was a tough battle with both teams wanting the ball.

There were a lot of great tackles and ball movements from both teams.

Neerim dug deep and two goals were kicked in short succession, bringing them home with the win in a nail biter. Under 14 Beautiful conditions greeted Hallora and Neerim District on Saturday and a high quality game ensued.

The last quarter was an arm wrestle but Neerim did enough to hold off for a hard fought win.

Garfield v Drouin Gold Under 10 Drouin Gold asserted itself from the beginning with skilful team play.

Late goals to the Hawks in the second quarter started showing up some cracks in the Stars’ gameplan.

A very tight contest ensued in the third and an exciting final term saw Garfield fight back hard, however their run came too late. Under 12 Garfield displayed a defensive game all the way through, making it tough for Gold to take the football through the middle posts.

A goal in the final quarter brought it home in the end for the win to Garfield. Under 14 The match was important for Garfield to secure a place in the finals.

The game was a nail biter from beginning to end.

Both teams showed awesome skills in a tough game but Garfield’s made the most of their chances and finally ran away with the win.

Caldermead­e v Drouin Maroon Under 10 Caldermead­e came out strong from the start kicking five unanswered goals in the first half.

Maroons came out strong in the but struggled to find their feet.

Caldermead­e were too strong and came out with the win. Under 12 Maroon were ready to rumble coming out of the blocks with a handy lead against Caldermead­e who put up a great defensive wall.

Both teams were hungry for the last win of the season but at the final siren it was Cannons for the win.

Caldermead­e’s Blake Greenaway played his 50th game and Maroon’s Darcy Britt played his 50th game. Under 14 Maroon were a little slow off the start but progressiv­ely improved as the day went on.

Both teams played hard but Drouin Maroon ran faster and took the win. Ellinbank v Bunyip Under 10 Ellinbank were able to move the ball forward well and scored well in the first half.

The weather came in during the second half but to their credit Bunyip never gave up and won the last quarter. Under 12 The Ellinbank boys got off to a good start, scoring a goal quickly.

For the next three quarters it was a very even contest and both teams struggled to score.

Bunyip fought hard but fell just short against a very determined Ellinbank side who, with another early goal in the last quarter hung in for the win.

Ellinbank’s Sydney Parke played 50 games. Under 14 With a huge ask for Bunyip to get a finals position hanging in the balance, Bunyip teamed up like never before and dominated throughout the match.

Ellinbank attempted to man up better and get to the ball first but it was not enough, and Bunyip pulled off the victory they needed to secure a finals place.

Warragul Blues had the bye.
