Warragul women finish season

-

The Warragul Industrials Women’s football team played their final home and away game on Sunday playing against Cranbourne at Casey Fields in windy conditions.

Both sides were evenly matched with Cranbourne winning on their previous encounter, but the Dusties were looking to turn that around after a good win last week.

The game started with some fierce tackling, the Dusties girls having the majority of the possession in their forward 50 and kicking the first score of the game with a behind. But not to be outdone the Cranbourne team fought back taking control of ail end of the first quarter and booting a goal before the first break of the match.

The second quarter saw the Cranbourne girls dominate, but not to be outdone the Dusties girls fought hard to keep in the game and a goal from Breanna Pratt kept the Dusties in touch, trailing eight points at the major change.

Some fierce tackling by the Dusties gave them the majority of the ball but the girls were not able to get past the hardened defensive side at Cranbourne. That prevented them on numerous occasions in kicking another goal in the third.

Some exciting and impressive tackling skills displayed by new women’s player Channen Dare gave the Dusties girls every opportunity to put them closer to Cranbourne, but it was still Cranbourne in the lead at the final change by seven points.

The Dusties were well and truly in touch for the final quarter of football and they gave their all, pushing the ball forward on numerous occasions but Cranbourne backs continued to thwart every effort the Dusties made.

As the game was still winnable for them with two minutes left, unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Cranbourne came away winner on the day by 11 points.

Even with the win by Cranbourne, the Dusties finished a very respectable fifth on the ladder for the season, just missing finals for 2018.

Final score: Cranbourne 2-8 (20) to Warragul Industrials 1-3 (9). Cranbourne: Goal kickers: A Bell, S Holland. Best players: R Bastian, B Campbell, N Turner, S Timoney, H Hunter, M Tralongo. Warragul: Goal kickers: B Pratt. Best players: C Dare, B Pratt, C Maher, T Hume, J Robertson, C Graham.
