Sam is top apprentice

-

A final year apprentice with a Warragul firm has been named Victoria’s top electrical apprentice.

For 21 year-old Sam Morrow is was his second award from industry body the National Electrical and Communications Association after two years ago being named the top second year apprentice.

Sam, who lives in Moe, will complete his apprenticeship that he has served with Malady Electrical in November.

The award presented at a dinner at Crown Casino earlier this month included a certificate and $5000.

Sam said the fact his father was an electrician that was not the driving reason for joining the electrical trade.

He said that after completing secondary school a further four years “at a desk” doing tertiary studies did not appeal to him.

“I wanted something that would make me think and enable me to use my hands,” he said.

In the latter stages of his apprenticeship Sam has progressed to running some of Malady Electrical’s large projects and said he’d be interested in moving into project management roles in future.

Malady’s was also recognised at the awards for its mentoring of an apprentice of the year with principal Tony Malady also receiving a certificate acknowledging the achievement.

Sam said he was very grateful to Malady’s and the “tradies at the firm that have helped him along the way”.
