Extra skills for new drivers
Baw Baw L2P has added skills development sessions to its community role of supervising young people to gain driving skills.
The group’s key role is to supervise eligible young people to gain driving skills, understand and use the road rules and gain at least 120 driving hours prior to the probationary licence test.
As well, all participants take part in sponsorfunded skills development sessions, which have included truck awareness and safety, car maintenance, finance choices, Keys Please and Looking After Your Mates.
Presenters have included a lawyer, VicPolice highway patrol, vehicle dealers, CFA volunteers and bank staff.
Last week saw 14 learner drivers and mentors complete a food handler course to use hygienic practices.
Facilitator was Yvonne McKay and every participant was included in all aspects of the training day and learnt functional and practical processes.
The hand-washing experiment was the first exercise to make everyone think again about cleanliness and cross-contamination. Preparing, handling, presenting and serving foods had the learners concentrating on proving their knowledge and new skills.
Baw Baw L2P coordinator Beth Carr said she had received positive feedback from a learner driver. She had arranged a job interview and work trial in the food industry, with the welltimed food hygiene course giving her an extra advantage.
