Garfield kick off season in style

-

Garfield Bowling Club opened its 2018/19 pennant campaign in good style this week, with three of four sides having wins and the fourth going down by just two shots.

On Saturday, the club’s three sides did battle with two at home and one away.

Division two: Garfield lost to Traralgon (3) 92/94.

The side fought hard all day against Traralgon, finally going down by just two shots overall.

The team of Frank Prins, Ray Biffin, Alan White and skip John Majkut led most of the day. However, Traralgon came back in the end to win by just one shot, 24/23.

Steve Bassed’s team of Gary Helmore, Gary Payne and Peter Lieshout struggled early but rallied well to finish only two shots down, 21/23.

The dominant team on the day was Rode James, Joe Lenders and Nick Henwood, skipped by Stephen Whyte, who, with multiple shots on many ends, had a convincing 26/18 win.

Stuart Gemmill, Les Pumphrey, Shane Oliver and skip Tom Cleary made up the fourth team in the side. They had an up-and-down tussle all day, finally succumbing to lose 22/29. Better luck next time guys.

Division four: Garfield Newborough (4) 92/89.

Garfield visited Newborough (formerly Yallourn) and had an overall three-shot win to start their first campaign in division four in good fashion.

Maureen Lampot skipped the team of Phil Humphries, Colin Mills and Malcolm Newham. With a consistent performance all day, they had a good 21/15 win.

The team of Graeme Burton, Brian Fox, Helene Newton and skip Bob Lamport didn’t fare so well. They struggled all day and lost 15/34. (2) defeated

Wes Goodman’s team of Don Knight, Barrie Smith and Gordon Moxey limped out of the boxes, losing the first six ends. However, they recovered well to win the game 23/21.

The last, but by no means least, team in the side was that of Lex Taylor, Cliff Stephens, Ron Saunders and skip Kevin Donald. They outperformed their opposition all day to finish with a resounding 33/19 win.

Division six: Garfield (3) defeated Thorpdale (2) 45/43.

Division six was at home to Thorpdale, who were struggling for players. Garfield’s own Jan Moxey filled in for Thorpdale with a creditable performance for someone who doesn’t normally play pennant.

The team of Jan Johnson, Bev Sainsbury, Ken Newton and skip Damian Brick led all day, coming home with a four-shot win, 24/20.

Judy Pocklington’s team of Alan Wilson, Keith Sainsbury and Isabel Deane, had a close go all day with their opponents. They finally went down 21/23, giving the side an overall two-shot win.

It was a good start with the team aiming to repeat last season’s grand final place.

Tuesday

The midweek side travelled to Trafalgar for its first outing. The lads and lasses came home with a very good win, winning two rinks and drawing the third.

Division three: Garfield defeated Trafalgar (2) 62/41.

Judy Pocklington’s team, consisting of Adrian Helmuth, Damian Brick and Sue Stainsfield, had a convincing 22/12 win.

Jan Johnson’s team of Phillip Humphries, John Majkut and Bev Sainsbury did one better, winning 23/12.

The third rink, consisting of Malcolm Newham, Bob Lamport, Lex Taylor and skip Maureen Lamport, fought out a close battle all day. They came back in the last end to wrestle a 17-all tie.

A great start to a successful season.
