Neerim win local battle

Neerim District had mixed results to open the pennant bowls season.

Division two: Neerim District defeated Warragul (2) 107/75.

Neerim District had an overall 32-shot win playing at home against Warragul (2).

Peter Throup (skip), Rob Cook, Colin McKay and Gerry Engelstadt won against Bob Currie’s team 29/17.

Neerim got out to a healthy lead by the break only to have Warragul fight back. Neerim steadied to win by 12 shots.

Shane Hogan (skip), Peter Brooks, Russell Meehan and Karen Sheers lost to Peter Wood’s team 22/23.

Scores were tight up to the break. Warragul jumped clear when play resumed, only to have Neerim pick up five shots on the last two ends. Neerim went down by only one.

Ray Watts (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Bill Cook and Greg Bond defeated David Smith’s team 26/18.

Scores were again tight going into the break, with Warragul getting a four-shot lead just after. Neerim fired up and came home strongly to win by eight shots.

Angus McGillivra­y (skip), Neil Adams, Chris Hogan and Tony Thornton beat David Gatewood’s team 30/17.

Neerim had a four-shot lead at the break and then performed strongly in the second half to win by 13 shots.

Division five: Neerim District (2) lost to Traralgon RSL (3) 50/86.

Neerim District played away against Traralgon, losing all rinks.

Ross Pollard (skip), Wes Ellis, Liz Hodge and Kay Cousins lost to M. Gibbins’ team 16/26.

Neerim competed well but dropped 12 shots between ends 10 and 13. The went down by 10 shots at the end.

Bruce Mironow (skip), Gerald Winter, George Rymer and Marion Willis lost to S. Morland’s team 17/24.

Neerim was leading 13/7 at the 14th end but fell away after the break to go down by seven shots.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Thelma Schroeder, Di Tame and Gerry Melling lost to F. Metcalf’s team 17/36.

Neerim was well down at the break but to their credit matched RSL when play resumed. They went down by 19 shots.

Tuesday

Playing at home against Traralgon, Neerim District had an 11-shot loss to open the season.

Division one: Neerim District lost to Traralgon 48/59.

Thelma Schroeder (skip), Dianne Tame, Kay Cousins and Steve Halligan, playing against D. Wylie’s team, lost 14/19.

Neerim was leading after the first seven ends, but Traralgon kicked away to lead by 11 shots at one stage. Neerim fought back to go down by only five shots.

Karen Sheers (skip), Cookie Halligan, Marion Willis and Gerry Engelstadt, playing against P. Trewin’s team, lost 13/28.

Scores were close halfway through, but Traralgon came home strongly.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Liz Hodge, Gerald Winter and Gerry Melling played against K. Garry’s team and won 21/12.

Neerim dropped the first four ends but then got down to work. They won by nine shots.
